Controversial question, right? Do you believe in Heaven?

As a volunteer bereavement counsellor, I often always ask my clients, ‘Where do you think he/she is?’

Some people are 100% sure and answer straight away; ‘They’re with me’, They’re gone. They’re in the ground’, ‘They’re with God.’

Often though, the shock of losing someone they love really makes someone really question what they did believe in, or even think about it for the very first time.

We’re human. We all want to know the answers. Not knowing where a loved one goes after they die isn’t fun. It’s not some great big fun surprise for you when you go to join them. It sucks.

So what do I do when my clients don’t know the answer? I can’t tell them. I don’t know what the answer is either, but here’s what I do say:

I think if you can believe in something that gives you comfort, that’s what’s important.

I realised a long time ago that institutionalised religion wasn’t for me, as there were always certain rules or beliefs I didn’t like and made me feel afraid, or just didn’t sit right with me. Then, one magical night when I was about sixteen, desperately trying to find a ‘group’ I fitted in to, I realised that I could actually just pick and choose the bits I liked and create my own sort of religion.

I was no longer religious, I was spiritual.

If your religion brings you comfort and support, I’m so pleased, but, don’t ever feel like you have to conform to any sort of group, sector or belief (spiritual or not). If it doesn’t serve you, let it go.

People often call me ignorant or weird for never watching the news or reading a newspaper, but I would rather keep my energy high and positive and try to be a light for the world than get depressed with the awful stories (because let’s face it, there are never any happy stories). I figure if the world’s going to end someone will tell me, and if there’s a major disaster the charities I donate to will email me asking for more money, so I’m quite happy in my ignorance.

Do what’s right for you. Do what keeps your energy high. Lean towards joy.
